1st district:

In the present Law Court your guide will show you the oldest part of the former royal palace from the Middle Ages; it was turned into a prison during the Revolution in 1792; the most famous prisoners were the queen Marie-Antoinette and the revolutionary leader Robespierre ; this is why it was turned into a museum of the French Revolution.

Orangerie

During the guided visit of the Walter-Guillaume collection you’ll get to know the development of painting from Renoir to Picasso and his friends. The museum was entirely restored around the millennium; now it respects Claude Monet’s wish to have day light directly on his eight Nymphs (waterlilies) which are as long as a bus each.

Built by King St Louis in the purest gothic style in order to worship the Crown of Thorns, the Saint Chapel is now a museum with the original stained-glass windows; they are the second world ensemble of that kind after Chartres cathedral. Binoculars are useful during the guided visit.

Picasso Museum

Why is the Picasso museum set in a former noble palace from the 17th century? Though leader of modern art, the artist always lived in old buildings nevertheless. Among all world’s collections dedicated to this artist, this museum in the Marais is the only one that shows examples of all his many periods. Furthermore, the museum setting connects the building with Picasso’s life…The guided visit lets you understand that.

4th district :

TOWER OF THE NOTRE-DAME CATHEDRAL

Begun in the 12th century when Maurice de Sully was bishop, the construction of the famous Notre Dame cathedral lasted almost two hundred years. Our visit to the towers, which are 70 metres high, leads through the Galerie des Chimères, the legendary bell, to the top of the south tower which offers a unique panoramic view of Paris.

5th district :

CLUNY NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE MIDDLE AGES

A very rich collection including all techniques known in the old times is visible in an ancient house from the 15th century which is as beautiful inside as outside. The most famous ensemble is the tapestry with the Lady and the Unicorn that are still mysterious. During the guided visit you will also see the ruins of the roman baths as well as the kings heads providing from the cathedral facade.

Panthéon

On top of a hill named “Ste Genevieve Mountain “ the present Pantheon was supposed to be named “Ste Genevieve Basilica” but the revolutionary leader Robespierre decided differently. This impressive monument is a museum dedicated to the Glories of France. During the guided visit you first admire the wall paintings about the religious history of the country around Foucault’s pendulum hanging from the dome. Then you visit the crypt where Victor Hugo is one of the 70 personalities buried.

7th district :

Rodin Museum

Before the changing of the former aristocratic palace Biron into the present museum it was Auguste Rodin’s last studio. The guided visit allows you to get closer to the famous bronze works in the gardens, including the most glorious French sculpture from the 20th century, the Thinker. The pre-work is upstairs; at the ground floor you will see mainly the masterpieces in marble plus some paintings by Rodin and his friends .

INVALIDS / MUSEUM of the ARMY

A little part of the buildings have been used as a military hospital since Louis 14th but the main part is the largest military museum in the world; some pieces are really beautiful such as parade swords with gold or ivory. With your guided visit you will see in particular the most popular part, the Dome where Napoleon rests in an impressive decor close to his son and Marechal Foch among others.

ORSAY MUSEUM

A former railway station turned into an art museum: what a challenge to show the national collections from 1848 to 1914 !
